A blog for MBTI and music.
Our aim is to figure out the MBTI personality type of songs and artists. We are partial to the Jungian Cognitive Function theory, rather than the Myers-Briggs theory, but you don't have to know a whole lot about either one to suggest music or discuss the posts. Disclaimer(s): We aren't saying that people of a certain type only like music that is their type. We aren't saying that if you enjoy a certain type of music, you have to be that type. The posts in this blog do not reflect the personality types of actual people, and we aren't trying to. We're simply having a bit of fun with Jungian psychology. And music.

Anonymous asked: What about Nirvana? And Bright Eyes?

Answer:

Hm… I think I’ll take a raincheck on Nirvana, for a little while at least. I’ll get to that since there’s been plenty of requests.

Bright eyes is hard. The Si/Ne is very clear, especially in songs like Mirrors and Fevers, as well as some others. All of their songs seem to be reflecting on past events which is very Si, complete with that Ne-like creative edge to the lyrics and general song.

I’ll have to go with INFP here, because of the emotional intensity and dreaminess alongside the Ne/Si. That being said, ENFP is equally as possible, so I’m not going to write them down as INFP just yet ^ u ^

Talking heads, ect.

I’m INTP and I really like the talking heads. “Songs About Buildings and Food” seems very INTP to me. Also the PIxies, David Bowie, Arcde fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

In general I prefer music that has more abstract lyrics (N), unexpected structure or instrumentation (P) Is not overly sentimental (T). The music I listen to is also usually alternative rock n roll which I think could appeal to Introverts because it’s make to be listened to rather than danced to or sung along with.  I also have a thing for Punk music from the 70’s/80’s, especially when I was younger. Maybe that’s the P or N reacting to being forced to comply with rules and standards.

MusicalTypes: I don’t have the best ear for 70’s-80’s music. That being said, I can hear the Ne and Ti in a few songs from the Talking Heads album you mentioned.

Anyone want to help me out with this?

thelithiumcat asked: Hi, INTP here. I'm not sure what we're supposed to suggest. Is it just general genres and artists we like, or are we trying to type specific musicians? I'm not into Tool but I heard their lyricist is an INTP. As for my own preferences, I don't usually like music that tries to pull some open, empathic emotional reaction out of me. I like bluesy classic rock (particularly GNR); some metal. I also like wind band music and orchestral soundtracks. I'm not a fan of pro-tools-based or mainstream music.

Answer:

Welcome! I’d like to direct your attention to this post here. Reading back over it, I understand your confusion.

To clarify, this blog is for typing music only, not people. We can type bands, but not the members of the bands. It gets a little more confusing when you’re looking at a single artist, but we’re only typing their music, not the person behind the music. There may be some correlation between artists and their music, but not necessarily.

Someone else suggested Tool, and I just got around to answering that today. The post is here.

As for what to suggest/ask, please keep people to a minimum and stick to artists/songs. I’m not doing a very good job of explaining this, am I?

For example, we can type Coldplay, but we’re not really interested in typing Chris Martin (the lead vocalist).

I hope this cleared this up for you!

timeforwolves asked: Since you've asked about 'T' music - as an xNTP I guess I'd suggest Tool - they've always seemed fairly NTP-ish to me both lyrics-wise and music-wise. And Ulver perhaps...? I guess I could come up with a few more but that would take a more extensive look at my music library... (And by the way, I'm totally checking out those two artists - Bonobo and Grimes - suggested as INTP!)

Answer:

Thanks for the suggestions! And I hope you do check out some of the music we’ve talked about! One of the goals of this blog is to promote musical diversity.

WOW. Listening to Schism and reading the lyrics, DEFINITELY xNTx. Very little F. Schism isn’t enough to convince me INTP instead of INTJ, but definitely introverted, definitely T, and definitely N. Stinkfist seems more Ne, but more extraverted in general.

Hmm. I’d agree with your suggestion of xNTP.

As for Ulver, let’s see. Based on the intro for I Troldskog Faren Vild, I almost said S, and then they started singing. Wow. Definitely N. Not convinced of the T, though. Yeah, I’m actually leaning more to F for Ulver. They seem introverted, and Ne. Meaning, if they were T, they’d be INTP, but as they’re not …

Ulver: INFP

frontispiece asked: My friend who is INFJ adores Regina Spektor, however I on the other hand am INFP and Ive never quite gotten into her music. Elliott Smith is a singer-songwriter I like. Also its good to note that my INFJ friend prefers the female's voice, while I would rather listen to a guy singing. Im sure that might just be a person preference when listening to music rather than myers-briggs type differences (or does it have a tendency to lean one way or another?).

Answer:

Remember that your type does not mean you’ll enjoy music of the same type. I’m an INFJ, and INFJ music gets old, really fast. But that’s just me.

As for female vs. male preference, I haven’t noticed that leaning one way or the other. It is interesting to think about, though. I think it probably has more to do with gender identity than personality type, although there are probably many other factors that go into it.

I’m assuming you’re asking me to type Elliot Smith?

He’s definitely introverted. Definitely N, although I’m having some difficulty saying Ni or Ne. Seems more F leaning, as well. He doesn’t seem particularly Fe.

INFP, although I could be talked around to INFJ.

Regina Spektor’s post is here.

Anonymous asked: Can you type Britney Spears' music?

Answer:

Certainly!

She’s definitely S, no matter which way you look at it. Also Extraverted and Feeling, although not necessarily Extraverted Feeling.

Extraverted Sensing for sure, which would mean Introverted Feeling.

ouroboros-ontology asked: What are your thoughts on Roger Waters of Pink Floyd?

Answer:

We don’t really type people. We focus more on typing music/songs. But I’ll do my best.

There’s an interesting discussion on this forum, if you’d like to check it out.

xNTx seems to be the only thing people agree on.

Based on the names of the songs in his album, The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking, he seems more Ti than Te, which would mean xNTP. He does seem more introverted, but it’s difficult to say that his Ti is dominant.

Final answer, although I’m not positive: INTP.

Keep in mind, typing people is not the aim of this blog.

Anonymous asked: Could Marina and the Diamonds be ENTJ? It especially seems to come through in the Family Jewels album

Answer:

From what I’ve heard of Marina and the Diamonds, which is admittedly very little, they could most definitely be ENTJ. (Based on previous knowledge of Primadonna and Seventeen)

The Ni is definitely there, as is the Extraversion, so that would be ENxJ. They are quite emotional, but not in the traditional Fe way.

If they aren’t ENTJ, then they’re ENFP, but I would lean more toward ENTJ because there’s evidence of Ni in their musical style and lyrics.
